About the Institute

Woldia Institute of Technology (WiT) is one of the youngest technology institutes in Ethiopia. The Institute was initially established as the Faculty of Technology in 2012, concurrently with the establishment of Woldia University. At its inception, the Faculty comprised three departments: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 2019, the Faculty was upgraded to Woldia Institute of Technology (WiT).
Currently, the Institute comprises four schools and eleven departments, namely the School of Computing, School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, School of Civil and Water Resource Engineering, and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Through these schools and departments, the Institute offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, and related fields.

Since its establishment, Woldia Institute of Technology has played an important role in providing higher education and producing skilled professionals in engineering and technology. Its graduates are contributing to Ethiopia’s industrial, educational, agricultural, construction, and other economic sectors, as well as pursuing professional careers abroad. The Institute aspires to become a premier institution in engineering and technology education, producing competent professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, and problem-solvers through relevant and practice-oriented curricula.

Currently, the Institute has 1,654 students enrolled in 10 undergraduate programs, 8 Master of Science (MSc) programs, and 3 PhD programs. It has 46 well-equipped laboratories that support practical instruction, research, innovation, and technology development. These facilities also enable the Institute to provide technical services and support to industry, government institutions, communities, and other key stakeholders.

Woldia Institute of Technology is committed to addressing practical community and national development challenges through education, research, innovation, technology transfer, and community engagement. The Institute emphasizes practice-oriented teaching and research that respond to the needs of local communities, industries, and other stakeholders. In particular, it seeks to enhance its national impact by developing and disseminating appropriate technologies tailored to local conditions and industrial requirements.

The Institute has established partnerships with national and international organizations to strengthen its teaching, research, innovation, technology transfer, and community service activities. These partnerships provide opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and joint initiatives. The Institute’s academic, technical, and administrative activities are supported by qualified and experienced academic staff, technical assistants, and administrative personnel, who contribute to the effective implementation of its education, research, innovation, and community service missions.
