About the Department

Brief Description About The Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Woldia University is an engineering academic unit within the Woldia Institute of Technology and the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering. The department provides engineering education, practical training, research, innovation, and industry/community-oriented activities aimed at preparing competent and ethically responsible mechanical engineers for national and international practice.

1.1 Historical Development

Woldia University was established in July 2011 with four faculties, including the Faculty of Technology. At its establishment, the Faculty of Technology included Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. As the University expanded, the Faculty of Technology was upgraded to the Woldia Institute of Technology on June 2, 2019. The Institute is currently organized into four academic schools, including the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering began academic activities in 2011 with eight full-time academic staff members and an initial intake of 47 regular undergraduate students. The department has since expanded in staffing, specialization areas, academic offerings, laboratories, workshops, and learning facilities.

1.2 Description of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a very wide discipline that deals with the design and analysis, manufacture and maintenance of machines, the production and proper utilization of energy, and the design and operation of systems involving both humans and machines. It also includes studies such as new sources of energy, smart materials, pollution control, etc., which are key state-of-the-art in current research areas. In academics, industries and community has expressed the requirement of Mechanical Engineering graduates and there is high demand of this field graduates with innovative skills in industrial development predominate and to respond to the need for rapid industrialization and the changing societal needs of the country for sustainable development.

The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs covering all important branches and disciplines of mechanical engineering to fill the above affirmation gap. Therefore, this program offers a diverse range of learning experiences to familiarize students with the breadth and richness of Mechanical Engineering studies. Comprehensive selections of courses that combine both theoretical and practical approaches are included in the curriculum.  The course of study encompasses Mechanical design, manufacturing and industrial management engineering, thermal and energy system design, and automotive and control system engineering. To innovate and improve designs while ensuring functionality, safety, and efficiency, the field necessitates both creativity and analytical skills.

To achieve the above objectives, the Mechanical Engineering department began as a department in 2011 under the Faculty of Technology with a staff of 8 lecturers and 5 assistant lecturers at the beginning of Woldia University. Now the department has 54 staff members with different specializations who are actively engaged in teaching, research, professional development, and community engagement activities.

Vision

To be one of the top five departments in Ethiopia in the field of Mechanical Engineering by the year 2022 E.C.
